Our School Community Interviews

Student Support Workers

We are learning about community workers.
We talked to Gerri and Milarosa.
Their job is school and student support worker.
Some things they do are helping kids with math and reading.
They help the teacher and supervise at the playground.
They need a computer and school supplies.
Gerri said she needs her glasses!
They like to help the nice kids in Ms. Quon's class. They are very good at helping.

Secretary
We are learning about community workers.  Today we interviewed Ms. Yvette. 
Ms. Yvette is a secretary.  She has been doing that job for four years.  Ms Yvette answers the phone and makes photocopies.   Also she puts papers into files.  She needs a phone and computer too.  She likes to say hello to kids.

Inner City Support Worker
We  interviewed a community worker  in our school.  The person we interviewed was Denise Aasen.  We asked Denise a few questions and she answered every one.  She said her job was called Inner City Support Worker. One of the things she does in her job is support a neighbourhood assistant (that means help). Another thing she does is help the project teacher.  Two things she needs for her job is good students and some good staff.  Then we asked her what she likes most about her job and she said working with kids.  She also said she loved working with all age groups. We had so much fun interviewing her.

Youth and Family worker
Our class is learning about community workers and we are interviewing people to know more about them so... we interviewed Ms. Leung.  Her job is called Youth and Family Worker.  She's been doing that job for 23 yrs, that was 16 yrs before we were born!  A few things she does is: talk to kids, talk to their parents, and run little groups of children.  Two things she needs for her job are books and toys/games.  When we asked her what she liked the most about her job, she said "When I meet interesting kids".  We had fun interviewing Ms. Leung.
Staff Assistant
Our class is learning about the community workers.  We interviewed Margot.  She works at the library.  The title of her job is a staff assistant. She has been working at the library for 36 years.  That is a very long time.  Three things she does in the library is:put the books back on the shelf, she checks out books, and she checks in the library books.  Some things she needs for her job are eyes and hands to see and put the books back.  What she likes about her job is the kids because people and kids go to the library some times. We think Margot has a very hard job.



Resource Teacher
We interviewed Ms. Judge. Her job is a Resource Teacher. She has been doing this job for 3 years. It's not that long. Some things she does in her job are reading books with kids, helping kids learn to read, and helping kids learn to write. Do you want to know some things she needs for her job? We will tell you. She needs kids so they can read better and she needs lots of books. What she really likes about her job is talking to kids and watching them learn. We think her job is really important.


Principal
Our class is learning about community workers.  We interviewed Ms. Jorgensen, the principal of Strathcona Elementary School.  Ms. Jorgensen has been doing it for seven years.  (That was in 2004.)  Three things she does in her job are: take care of the school, help kids and parents, and get to learn.  Then we asked her what she needs for her job.  She needs to make herself a good listener and good communicator.  (That means she has to talk to people she doesn't know.)  The last thing we asked her was what she liked the most about her job.  She said, the kids.  We think she has a big job.    

Vice Principal
Just the other day we interviewed Mr. Knibbs.  His job is vice- principal at our school.   Mr. Knibbs has been doing this job for 6 years.  A few things he does in this job are teach kids, help purchase things for the school (like pencils and erasers).  Another thing he does is he runs assemblies.  What are two things he needs you say?  Well he needs a good sense of humor and he needs to love working with kids and adults.  He also likes to learn.  We had fun interviewing him!

Primary Music Teacher
Ms. Halsey-Brandt has done this job a long long time. We asked her "What are some things you do in your job?" She said "teach kids how to sing, teach kids how to play instruments and teach kids how to play musical games." Then we asked her "what are a few things you need for your job? She said "I need music sheets and a piano." Then we asked her "what do you like best about your job?" Ms. Halsey-Brandt said she loves everything about her job. Especially getting ready for the concerts!

 Cafeteria worker
We are learning about community workers  so we interviewed Maria. She is a cafeteria worker. Maria has been doing her job for 20 years.That is kind of a long time. She has to do  reserving groceries for everybody that goes to eat lunch at the school. Maria also prepares food for the school. And serves us too. She also needs an apron and gloves to serve the kids. When we asked her "What do you like the most about your job?" . . . she said   she likes to see our smiles when we come down for lunch!
